Stephen Ministry

What is Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Ministry is a program offered at our Church designed to help members, and others in the community, in times of crisis or special need. It is a one-to-one, caring ministry that pairs same-gender trained adult lay people with adults who need a Christian friend to walk with and support them during a particularly challenging and difficult time in their life.

The Stephen Ministry Program at Providence Presbyterian Church is affiliated with Stephen Ministries of Saint Louis, MO; a nationwide network of Stephen Ministry congregations, providing training and resources to congregations for more than 20 years.  Providence’s Stephen Ministry has been active in the life of Hilton Head Island’s community of faith since 2001 and is an important part of the adult pastoral care ministry of our church.

Who are Stephen Ministers and what do they do?

Stephen Ministers are congregational members who have been called to this ministry, trained, and commissioned by the Congregation to provide high quality, distinctively Christian care to members of our church and community. They provide support for those seeking help during a crisis or difficult time by meeting with them in a one-on-one, confidential relationship. Some examples of the types of issues where Stephen Ministers may provide support include but are not limited to:

  • Ministering to those experiencing the loss of a love one
  • Caring for those with serious illness/hospitalization
  • Hospice
  • Divorce
  • Assisting those dealing with issues of aging
  • Job loss or career change
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Loneliness or discouragement, and
  • Working with people who are simply looking for the strength to improve their lives.

Stephen Ministers understand that confidentiality is crucial to any inter-personal caring relationship and any information shared in the caring relationship will remain in confidence.
