History of Providence Presbyterian Church

Under the direction of its Founding Pastor, Dr. Gerald S. Mills, Providence Chapel held its first service on September 7, 1986, and was chartered by the Charleston/Atlantic Presbytery on December 14, 1986 with 127 members. We met for several years in a little chapel in the woods near the present campus. On December 5, 1991 our congregation moved into its present facilities on Cordillo Parkway.

We are a "joyful band of believers" absolutely confident that God has given us every gift necessary to accomplish His plan for us. We now number more than 800 active members with an average weekly attendance of nearly 600 in three worship services: two traditional services that begin at 9 and 11 a.m. and one contemporary expression of worship that begins at 6:29 p.m. in our Chapel in the Woods.

Dr. Gerald Mills, Pastor Emeritus, retired from Providence Presbyterian Church in April 1998. Our pastors, associate pastors and interim ministers through the years have included Bob Strachen, Vaughn Smith, Jeff Newlin, Andrew Chaney, Jerry Kramer, Dr. Howard Edington and Carmen Fowler. Since 2008, Dr. Martin Lifer has led us in worship and mission to Cause God Joy.

Providence Church is blessed to own nearly 27 acres of land fronting both Cordillo Parkway and South Forest Beach Road. The current facilities are nestled on 10 acres of this beautifully wooded land with emerging plans for the future expansion. This distinctive Church campus includes a spectacular 480-seat Sanctuary, Mills Education Building, Fellowship Hall and the Administration Building. Our 17,000 square foot complex was completed in 1991. The 8,000 square foot Mills Education Center, with a 90-seat chapel, a 90-seat fine arts auditorium, a parlor, and additional classrooms, was dedicated in February of 1999. An addition to the Administration Building in 2002 added four office areas. The unique, soaring design of our Sanctuary building has received architectural accolades and awards. The architect is a member of Providence Presbyterian Church, Todd O’Dell.

Between Fellowship Hall and the Mills Building, on a peaceful walk next to the lagoon, you will find our well-designed Columbarium in a quiet, peaceful area of the Church campus, ideal for private meditation.

Behind our present campus, back in the woods that harbors our little chapel; Providence Presbyterian Church now owns the property first given by General Joseph Fraser to the Savannah Presbytery. This property and the original chapel are now used for our Wednesday evening youth program, YouthROC and our contemporary expression of worship on Sunday evenings, 6:29, at 6:29 p.m.
